The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has invited applications for 8 Scientist posts at the ICMR–National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE), Chennai.

The recruitment is advertised under Advt. No. ICMR/NIE/01/2026-RPCell.

The posts are Scientist-D, Scientist-C and Scientist-B in Medical, Non-Medical and Veterinary streams. Candidates need an MBBS, MPH, PhD, Master’s degree or B.V.Sc & AH, depending on the post.

Who Can Apply for ICMR NIE Scientist Recruitment 2026

Scientist-D (Medical) needs an MBBS or equivalent recognised by MCI/NMC, or an MPH, or a PhD in Biomedical Sciences. Candidates also need 8 years of experience.

Scientist-D (Non-Medical) needs a Master’s in Biomedical Sciences or a Pharm-D recognised by UGC/PCI. Candidates also need 8 years of experience, and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences is desirable.

Scientist-C (Medical) needs an MBBS or equivalent recognised by MCI/NMC, or an MPH, or a PhD in Biomedical Sciences. Candidates also need 4 years of experience, and an MD/MS is desirable.

Scientist-C (Medical – Microbiology) needs the same qualification and 4 years of experience. Desirable experience is in Microbiology, Immunology, Immunogenetics, Molecular Biology or Next-generation sequencing.

Scientist-B (Medical) needs an MBBS or equivalent recognised by MCI/NMC. No minimum experience is stated in the notice, but R&D experience in Epidemiology or Public Health is desirable.

Scientist-B (Non-Medical – Disease Modelling) needs a Master’s in Biomedical Sciences or a Pharm-D recognised by UGC/PCI. R&D experience in infectious disease modelling is desirable.

For Scientist-B (Veterinary), candidates need a B.V.Sc & AH degree recognised by VCI. R&D experience in veterinary epidemiology and public health is desirable.

Experience counts as: PhD = 4 years, MD/MS = 3 years, MPH or M.Tech = nil. Only R&D experience relevant to the job counts, gained in Government, public or private institutions.

Age Limit

The maximum age limit depends on the grade and is counted as on 26 November 2026.

Scientist-D: maximum 45 years. Scientist-C: maximum 40 years.

Scientist-B: maximum 35 years. Age relaxation applies as per Government of India instructions, and the limit may be relaxed for exceptionally meritorious candidates with DG, ICMR approval.

Pay is as per the 7th CPC pay matrix, by grade of post.

These are direct recruitment posts with all-India transfer liability. Other allowances apply as per ICMR rules.

Selection Process

Selection is through a computer-based test (MCQs) or an interview, or both. All candidates meeting the minimum eligibility conditions are shortlisted first.

If numbers are high, ICMR will further shortlist on criteria fixed by the Competent Authority, generally higher relevant experience or a higher qualification.

Step 1: Online Application

Submit the online form with the fee and required documents before 26 November 2026, 5:30 PM. Incomplete applications, or those without the required documents, will be cancelled.

Step 2: Shortlisting

ICMR will first shortlist all candidates who meet the minimum eligibility conditions. If applications are received in large numbers, further shortlisting will be done on criteria fixed by the Competent Authority.

Step 3: Computer-Based Test

Shortlisted candidates may be called for a computer-based test with multiple-choice questions. The test is based on an understanding of research methods.

The test is qualifying in nature, with a minimum of 75 percentile required to qualify. The notification does not state a subject-wise syllabus, total marks, duration or negative marking.

Step 4: Interview / Personal Discussion

Candidates who qualify may be called for an interview or personal discussion.

Government or PSU employees must submit a No Objection Certificate from their employer at that time, with an undertaking of relief within one month of the appointment order.
